The National Centers for Coastal Ocean Service NCCOS provides provides a forecast of the Microcystis harmful algal blooms (HABs) in Lake Erie several times a week during the warmer months of the year. HAB forecasts are based on understanding the causes of HABs and how they respond to changing weather and ocean conditions. The other critical component of a HAB forecast is the ability to routinely and remotely detect HABs, their toxins, and environmental conditions that foster blooms and enhance their toxicity.
The UWSS will now be posting a Lake Erie Hypoxia Report, also received from the (NCCOS). In the summer the lake stratifies, with warm water on top and cold, dense, deep water below. This part of the lake is typically lower in oxygen levels and has a different chemistry. If strong winds or storms come in this can change operational practices at the WTP and our treatment processes are adjusted. We will be posting regular reports here throughout the summer season.
