Every Summer the Union Water Supply System is on the watch for blue-green algae. It starts forming in the shallow warm waters of Lake Erie close to Ohio and then makes its way across to area beaches. With the recent heat wave that Essex County has been experiencing the conditions are right to allow the formation of blue-green algae. UWSS wants to assure residents that at this point this condition is not affecting our drinking water supply. We are continuously monitoring the raw water that we take into our treatment plant and adjusting our processes as need be. Please note that cooler weather is expected later this week and this should help resolve the situation. There are several links to various news agencies for further reading. Also, please visit our National Ocean Service (NOAA) tab to see an overhead view of the lake and where the bloom is.
