UWSS Participates in Study – PFAS

The University of Waterloo is leading a team to identify and treat per – and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as forever chemicals. Through partnership with the National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) the team from University of Waterloo is leading the way to partner with many other professors and agencies in Ontario.

These partnerships allow experts from multiple aspects of water treatment to merge together to tackle the issues of PFAS. PFAS present a problem for water treatment as they are man made and are in a multitude of products. Traditional treatment methods are not working against PFAS, therefore more research is required to make changes to how they are processed.

Partnerships of this nature, along with NSERC, allows for funding to “further our advancements in the best practices for removing forever chemicals from Canada’s water supply”.

Union Water Supply System is happy to announce that the Ruthven Water Treatment Plan will be one of the areas being sampled throughout this research project. UWSS is excited to receive the benefit of participating in such a large project. Please click on the link to read the full Press Release.
